Moby Dick Festival 2012 – May 31 - June 2, Youghal, Co. Cork
The Moby Dick Literary festival will be running in Youghal from May 31 - June 2 and will celebrate the famous work by Herman Melville which was orginally published in 1851.
Moby Dick is still one of the most read books in America. The story is centred around Captain Ahab and his obsession with a huge white whale called Moby Dick. The whale caused the loss of Ahab’s leg on a previous whaling trip and he becomes obsessed with finding and killing the whale. Captain Ahab is so bent on revenge that he is willing to sacrifice his life, the lives of his crew members, and even his ship, the Pequod, to find and destroy the great white whale, Moby Dick.
Moby Dick has a special place in Youghal’s heart as the town was cast as New Bedford in the film of 1956, starring Gregory Peck as Captain Ahab. Many of the townsfolk were cast as extras in the film and there are plenty of stories to be told about their time on the film set. Youghal 4 All hope that this festival will revitalise the interest in Moby Dick and its importance to Youghal and its past.
The full event timetable can be viewed at the Moby Dick Event Timetable page.

Writer’s Week in Ardmore a Great Success
Another successful Writer’s Week has just taken place at the Molly Keane Writers Retreat in Ardmore. This is the third year of the Writer’s Retreat which receives on going support from Waterford County Council’s Arts Office and the Arts Council of Ireland.
Fourteen emerging writers gathered in Molly's house from the 13th to the 19th of August for the workshops ably facilitated by Lani O'Hanlon. Lani has been instrumental in bringing this retreat week to fruition since it’s inception three years ago and received well deserved plaudits from the participants for her ability to nurture their creativity and to give focus to their work. This year the special guest writer was poet Grace Wells who ran a fascinating workshop on 'Going where the Unconscious wants to take Us'. On the final night the popular public reading had a capacity audience with Grace reading from her debut collection 'When God Has Been Called Away to Greater Things', which won the Rupert and Eithne Strong Best Debut Collection award 2011.
